Understanding Anxiety: How We Can Help
Anxiety isn’t just about worry—it often has underlying root causes linked to past experiences, self-criticism, or unhelpful thinking patterns. At Therapy Huddersfield, we help clients uncover and make sense of these deeper causes so they don’t have to live with anxiety.
One approach we use is Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), which helps reduce self-criticism and build self-compassion. Anxiety activates the brain’s threat system, keeping people stuck in cycles of fear and avoidance. CFT works by engaging the soothing system, allowing clients to feel safer and more in control.
By exploring anxiety’s roots and learning practical coping strategies, clients gain a deeper understanding of their emotions and develop lasting resilience. Our therapists offer a supportive space to navigate this process with warmth and care. You don’t have to live with anxiety—we’re here to help you move forward with confidence.

At Therapy Huddersfield, we understand that OCD is a coping mechanism, developed to manage deep-seated fears or distress. While compulsions provide temporary relief, they reinforce anxiety. We help clients explore the underlying reasons behind their OCD and how it’s trying to help them.
One effective approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). This method gently exposes clients to their fears while reducing compulsions, breaking the anxiety cycle. We also use Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) to address self-criticism and build emotional resilience.
Our therapists provide a safe, supportive space to help clients grow in understanding, supporting them to develop healthier coping strategies. OCD does not need to define you— change is possible.

Support after difficult fertility, pregnancy or birth experiences
Experiences around fertility, pregnancy and birth can affect people in ways they do not always expect. You might find yourself going over what happened, feeling anxious or overwhelmed, avoiding reminders, or feeling like you have not quite returned to yourself.
Our midwife-led therapy offers specialist support for people affected by fertility, pregnancy, birth, loss and postnatal experiences. Led by a registered midwife, these sessions provide a calm, supportive space to gently process what happened and begin to feel more like yourself again.
You do not have to minimise what you have been through. If it still feels present for you, support is available.

At Therapy Huddersfield, we understand how exhausting and overwhelming depression can be. It affects every aspect of life, making even simple tasks difficult. We approach depression holistically, working to understand not just the symptoms but the underlying experiences and beliefs that have contributed to it.
We don’t pathologize depression. Instead, we see it as an understandable response to life’s challenges. Whether rooted in loss, past trauma, or emotional disconnection, depression is not a personal failing—it is a sign that something needs attention and care.
Our therapists use Person-Centred Therapy, creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel truly heard. We also draw from Richard Erskine’s Integrative Therapy, which explores emotional needs, relationships, and past experiences to foster deep healing.
With warmth and understanding, we support each client’s unique journey toward greater well-being.

Experiencing bereavement and loss can be an incredibly difficult and overwhelming time. The grief that comes with losing a loved one can bring a mix of emotions—sadness, anger, confusion, and sometimes even numbness.
At Therapy Huddersfield, we understand how challenging this experience can be and offer support to help individuals navigate their grief.
Our experienced counsellors use Person-Centred Therapy, providing a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can freely express their emotions. This approach helps individuals feel heard and understood, which is essential when dealing with loss. We also incorporate other talking therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help reframe overwhelming thoughts and emotions related to grief.
We are here to support you through grief, helping you process loss and find a path to healing.

We understand that workplace stress can be incredibly difficult to manage, especially when it impacts your well-being and productivity. At Therapy Huddersfield our therapists bring valuable experience from corporate and management roles, allowing them to offer a deeper understanding of the pressures you face. Through talking therapies and coaching skills, we help clients explore the sources of their stress and develop healthier coping mechanisms. We provide tailored support, helping you build resilience, improve work-life balance, and manage stress more effectively.

Therapy does not always have to rely on words
Some experiences are hard to explain. You might feel numb, disconnected, overwhelmed or unsure how to put what you are feeling into words. For adults, children and young people, traditional talking therapy is not always the easiest place to start.
Our specialist Art Therapy offers another way to explore difficult feelings and experiences. Using creative materials such as paint, clay or collage, clients can begin to express what feels hard to say out loud, in a safe and supportive space.
You do not need to be good at art. The focus is not on the outcome, but on using creativity to gently process emotions at your own pace.

At Therapy Huddersfield we support clients who have experienced adversity or who have had complex childhoods. These clients often describe struggling in their relationships with others. They may also experience dissociation or "being triggered". This type of presentation is commonly referred to as Complex Trauma or CPTSD. We understand how deeply this can affect a person's ability to navigate daily life.
Our therapists use modern evidence-based therapies, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), which are highly effective in helping clients develop a compassionate understanding of their own behaviours. IFS allows clients to identify and heal parts of themselves that were formed in response to trauma, enabling them to shift negative patterns and respond in a balanced and present way.
With the right support, long-lasting change is possible. Our approach empowers clients to process their past, manage their triggers, and live with greater emotional balance and peace of mind. Through therapy, we help you reclaim control over your emotional responses and create a path toward healing and greater well-being.

Why do I keep ending up in the same patterns?
Sometimes you can understand what is happening, but still feel unable to change it. You might find yourself repeating the same relationship dynamics, emotional reactions, fears, habits or ways of coping, even when part of you wants things to be different.
At Therapy Huddersfield, we offer support that looks beneath the surface of these patterns. Our specialist hypnotherapy approach combines talking therapy, hypnotherapy and other therapeutic techniques to explore what may be driving these cycles and support deeper, lasting change.
Therapy can help you understand what is happening underneath, release what feels stuck and begin to move forward with more clarity and control.

At Therapy Huddersfield, we offer specialist addiction support for drug, alcohol, and gambling addictions. Our team includes highly qualified therapists; one having previously worked as a nurse on rehab hospital wards and another with lived addiction experience. We provide initial support for withdrawal and sobriety management, as well as long-term therapy to explore the underlying causes of addiction. Our compassionate approach helps clients understand the root of their struggles and work towards lasting recovery with ongoing support.

At Therapy Huddersfield, we understand that trauma can take many forms. It might come from a single distressing event or from ongoing experiences that have felt overwhelming or unsafe. Trauma often affects how people relate to others, manage emotions, and feel within their own bodies.
Our therapists provide a safe, compassionate space to begin exploring these experiences at your own pace. We use modern, evidence-based approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) to help clients process events, reduce triggers, and rebuild a sense of safety and control. Healing from trauma takes time, but with the right support, meaningful and lasting change is possible.
Art Therapy and Trauma
Research in psychology and neuroscience has shown that creative processes, such as art-making, can support trauma recovery. Engaging in art allows individuals to process emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express verbally, promoting healing and integration. Our Art Therapy sessions provide a gentle, contained space where clients can externalise painful memories and begin to regain a sense of safety and control. -
At Therapy Huddersfield, we provide support for young people from age 6 to 18. We specialise in supporting children and young people through the most difficult and complex life experiences. Our therapists are highly skilled in building trusting relationships and are specially trained to support those with Autism or ADHD. Using a range of approaches such as play therapy and art therapy, we help young people and teenagers express themselves in a safe, supportive environment. Therapy helps them process emotions, build resilience, and develop healthy coping strategies, supporting their emotional well-being and personal growth.
We have a range of specialist young people’s therapists, so please get in touch to be matched with the best therapist for your child. For example, we have a specialist Art Therapist, Laura, who uses creative expression to help young people understand and communicate their feelings. Art Therapy has been shown to be highly effective in supporting children to process emotions and experiences that can be difficult to put into words. This gentle, evidence-based approach is especially helpful for those who may find traditional talking therapies challenging.

Sometimes you know something needs to change, but you are not sure how to make that happen. You might feel stuck in overthinking, avoidance, self-criticism, low mood, anxiety or ways of coping that no longer feel helpful.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is a practical and structured approach that looks at the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It can help you recognise patterns, understand what keeps them going and build tools to respond differently in everyday life.
CBT is not just about talking. It is focused on practical change, helping you develop strategies you can continue using long after therapy ends.

At Therapy Huddersfield, we welcome clients experiencing complex presentations such as hearing voices or those diagnosed with conditions like Bipolar Disorder or Borderline Personality Disorder. Our principles are non-pathologising and holistic, meaning we don’t view these experiences as something "wrong" with you. Instead, we focus on understanding your story, recognizing that these presentations often arise as responses to difficult or traumatic experiences. We believe that by understanding them in this way, healing can occur. Through therapies like Internal Family Systems (IFS), we help clients develop a compassionate understanding of their experiences, leading to greater self-awareness and lasting change.
I feel my therapy room is such a safe space. I relax and its Ok to say the most difficult things.
